I have realized that this year more than any other year I feel.

With schools closed for the holidays, the outreach residencies are all wrapped up for 2008. Teaching at these schools has been an amazing experience and I am so grateful that I was able to work with so many fantastic students this year. Through dance and choreography, I could truly see excitement, passion and appreciation on the students faces as they performed their dances to their schools, friends and family. Similarly, I think the excitement and love on my face was just as obvious as I watched the students perform. I am so proud of the students I was able to work with this year. They truly put their all into these dances and their dedication and hard work really showed a their final perofrmance.

As excited as I am for the holidays and to have a nice break with my friends and family back East, I am anxious to return to the schools in 2009 and do it all over again!

BNC students growing up with the Nutcracker

Yesterday I sat backstage with a couple of my older students and looked through their photo albums. In these pictures I saw them growing up - gaps in their teeth, clutching to their best buds, or their best blankies. Then I had the opportunity to glance around the room at all of my budding Nutcracker performers...many as young as 7...and remember that my "older" students, just a short 5 or 6 years ago were experiencing their own first Nutcrackers. And look at them NOW! My! How they've grown - developped as thinking dancers, taken on challenging choreography, found themselves in their movement.

Being backstage with these kids over the past couple of weeks, I have again remembered how most dancers identify their growth in ballet with their experiences with Sugar Plum Fairies and Cavaliers, Clara and the Prince. It makes growing up a dancer seem like a magical, supernatural fairytale - it was for me, and that magic continues to fuel my love for this art form to this day.

A window into the PR world

Hi all -

I thought I would give you a peek into my brain since it occurs to me that many of you may not realize how my role at BNC works. Since I am the PR Director, I am charged with the publicity of the whole organization. This means I am in contact with members of the press to pitch stories all year long.

Publications can publish any number of ways. They can be a daily (newspapers), weekly (Boulder Weekly, Westword), or monthly (5280, Denver Magazine)... we could keep going but let's keep it simple. Though there takes a level of planning for all three of these, the most difficult is the monthly magazines. Many of you may not realize that your December issue of 5280 was put to bed two months ago. Yup, that's right. So if I want a story in the, say, January issue, in October I need to be pitching ideas to them and sending press releases! Alright, let's put it in BNC terms...
Back in October when we were in the midst of Small Talk and Rock Ballets, I was already thinking about Love. a joint venture. Nutcracker happened for me in September and Small Talk? oh yeah, that was back in July.

People always ask me, "So, are you excited about (insert show name here)?" And yes, I love seeing all of our shows but my brain is already working on two months from now. It is a very funny feeling. Previous to being the PR Director, I worked in the ticket box office and everything was in the moment. Ticket orders were always for the current show and it was quite the mind shift to start thinking two months ahead.

So Happy Valentine's Day everyone and have a great Passover... I hope you enjoyed your trip into my world.

But really, enjoy the last weekend of Nutcracker and keep your eyes peeled to this blog and our emails for a VERY SPECIAL announcement in the VERY near future...

It's so exciting. Oh and remember this post when you hear our announcement and come pat me on the back for holding that in for so long. :-)

--Talia

Holiday cheer

I can't remember how many Nutcracker performances I've seen in my life.

I have only missed one in my entire 13 year tenure here. (Do the math - pretty impressive!) Every year the show has a new character and personality. This year, after watching the first weekend of performances, I am happy to have these images dancing in my head ...

...the unbridled enthusiasm and adorableness of the children in the cast ...

... our incredible company dancers, who regularly blow us away with their fearless contemporary dancing, now blowing us away in pointe shoes, tights and tutus ...

... the sea of happy, beautiful, starry-eyed kids in the audience dressed in their most beautiful holiday finery ...

... our School Director Julia Wilkinson Manley onstage after the performance inviting 75 children to come up and dance - and in doing so, giving them a memory they will remember forever ...

... our generous, wonderful dancers after a strenuous show coming back onstage to answer questions, and doing the splits (simultaneously!) when asked to do it by a 5 year old ...

It's true that I can hum Tchaikovsky's entire score in my sleep, and sometimes I wish I knew what it felt like to get holiday shopping done ahead of time instead of spending December weekends in the theatre. As we approach the holidays, you can hear the excitement in their voices as we prepare for The Nutcracker.

This production has been built around our wonderful school and the talents of the students that inhabit it. The holidays are never more special than when you are young, and we have taken that to heart. You will see our beautiful students dancing right alongside our professional company throughout this production. It is an invaluable experience for both the students and adults. Do not think of today's failures but of the success that may come tomorrow. You have set yourselves a difficult task, but you will succeed if you persevere; and you will find joy in overcoming obstacles. Remember, no effort that we make to attain something beautiful is ever lost."

Helen Keller

I find this quote to be incredibly relevant and inspiring. Art is a constant voyage to move people to feel; the emotions can range from immense joy to overwhelming sadness. Much like life. I have the amazing good fortune to be a witness to the creation of art in the form of dance on a daily basis, as well as the honor and privilege to experience the birth of a new work inches away from its creator. To see our dancers transcend all boundaries; their own included, creates feelings of enormous pride and joy deep in my soul. I truly wish I was a poet so that I could convey in words exactly what that is like. I am superbly lucky to have such beauty in my existence, and Ms. Keller could not have been more correct.

-- Dawn Fay

An amazing month

Well folks... I know we have been derelict in our blogging duties as of late but we have a very good excuse.

We were wonderfully overwhelmed with the response to Rock Ballets in the first two weekends of November. It was so exciting to see the Lakewood Cultural Center and Pinnacle Events Center sold out for both weekends!!! It was a rousing success and we got some really wonderful feedback from our audience. It was also a critical success. We received -

7 previews -

Denver Post (print & web)
Westword (print & web)
Daily Camera (print & web)
Vail Trail (print & web)
Broomfield Enterprise (print & web)
Longmont Times Call (print & web)
Colorado Dance Alliance (codance.org)

5 reviews -

Denver Post (print & web)
North Metro Papers
Rocky Mountain News (print & web)
http://www.worlddancereviews.com
http://www.denver.metromix.com/

2 recommendations – best bet for the weekend -

9 News – Kirk Montgomery / Metro Mix
Denver Post – Best Bet

Plus SO many blogs and internet postings!!!

It has just been so exciting and really solidified our place as a leader in the dance community in Denver. But wait! It doesn't end there...

On November 21st, we hosted our annual fundraising gala event - Nouveau at Night. It was our first year downtown. We were at the beautiful and AMAZING Westin Tabor Center and we had over 360!!!! attendees this year. Our silent auction was beautiful, the dinner was amazing, and the performance was incredible (it was a reprise of Garrett's Mediate the INXS ballet).

For those of you who don't host these types of events, it's a lot of work but SO worth it in the end. We spent last week corralling my office (that's where most of the auction items were stored... it was very colorful in here) and all day Thursday we tagged and troubleshot, and placed items where we wanted them to go for Friday. Friday we arrived at the Westin at 10am but our tech crew had been hard at work since 7am constructing the stage! We set up the auction based on how we laid it out in the studio... then we totally redid it... then we fluffed! Bows and elevation everywhere. Finally it was 5:00 and time to get ready. We rushed up to rooms upstairs to get cleaned up, dressed up, and made up. By 6:15 we were in the lobby ready to greet our guests.

It's been a long but incredibly fulfilling month. We were so excited to be able to share our successes with the city of Denver and the people who support what we do.

Now we move into Nutcracker. We have performances in Highlands Ranch this weekend and then our shows open December 12th!! Oh and keep your eyes peeled for a VERY SPECIAL announcement in the middle of December. I really recommend getting on our email list if you aren't already. Then you will be the FIRST to know! :-)

Have a great Turkey Day! I know I have to head home today to bake some pies!

dancing through landforms

Thursday, November 20 was the first residency performance of the year for Outreach. The fourth graders at Coronado Hills Elementary choreographed and presented dances through the topic of landforms There were three classes and each was a different landform; glaciers, canyons and badlands! The students had a wonderful time and looked fabulous on stage. The students were so proud to present their creation to the entire school and to their family in the evening.

This being my first outreach performance, I felt so proud of the students and was so ecstatic throughout the shows. The students didn't even need my cues for the dance, they knew it backward and forward! They worked so hard on these dances and their dedication and excitment really showed during the performances.

The next performance is December 9 with the fifth graders at Thornoton elementary. This was my first time to the conference and I must say, I had a fabulous time! I attended seminars on evaluation and assessment, collaboration, working with senior citizens and students with special needs and many more. Not only was this conference informative, but it was also A LOT of fun!

I learned so much and met so many people that gave me advice on how to be a better "outreach manager" and make a larger impact in local schools and communities. I am so excited to be back at BNC and start exploring new options for the Outreach program. I have been very antsy to get back and start working! I am specifically interested in collaborating with other service nonprofits in the area. I'll keep you posted as things progress.

It felt great to be surrounded by so many like minded people from across the country who do similar work. This conference definitely reinforced my views on outreach and reminded me how much I love my job!!!

Garrett Ammon's Rock Ballets - Publicity

Hi all! My sister was playing the clarinet before I was born, and my brothers and I each took our turns in choral music. I think this instilled in me an awareness, appreciation and perhaps an obsession with all kinds of music.

When I was away from home, as a ballet student, I couldn't resist hopping on the bus every other week when I would receive my small living stipend. I wouldn't go to the supermarket like I should have, I would go straight to the record store and browse the aisles for hours. I would finally manage to justify that I could buy the complete recordings of The Velvet Underground, or a Rolling Stones box set and still be able to feed myself.

Over the years, I have created work to classical, jazz, bluegrass, country, blues and of course rock music. The thing I most love about rock is the particular place it holds in our public consciousness. Whether the music is from your particular generation or not, you have likely heard the songs, or at least a song by the particular artist, at some point. This creates a common ground, or launching pad, for a conversation between the performers and the audience.

Dance is an overt expression of how are lives connect to and affect each other. I hope you enjoy this program and in someway feel a connection between what you see on stage and your own world.

Best wishes,

Pre-Pointe shoe fittings

Yesterday was a really exciting day for 11 young ladies in our pre-pointe program.

Master fitter Amy Kenney, of Boulder Body Wear, came to fit these young dancers with their very first pair - and they were absolutely beside themselves with happiness and excitement. These shoes are different from pointe shoes because the shank (the bottom of the shoe which is akin to the sole of a regular shoe) is very soft. The shank of a pointe shoe is very, very hard. Pre-pointe shoes afford dancers a great deal of strength as they learn to keep their ankles from wobbling and as they try to roll up to pointe. However, they are safer than regular pointe shoes because while the dancer can work through them and gain strength while trying to get all the way up on pointe, the shank is too hard to actually allow them to go on pointe (which is very dangerous if you are not strong enough).

Outreach Update

Everything in the world of Outreach is really on a roll right now. I have been working very hard on donating tickets for people to see the show this weekend, and was able to donate a total of 180 tickets! Organizations such as Emergency Family Assistance Association, Broomfield Senior Services, Denver Youth Services, Volunteers of America and many more were able to use these tickets. With the help of Artreach, over 30 different nonprofits that offer assistance to senior citizens, youth, homeless and children are able to come to Small Talk!

Many of the people who come to these shows with these tickets have never seen a ballet, and this may be the only form of entertainment, aside from their tv, they have seen in a while. The first show of the season is small talk – the show where you get to see an amazing variety of short new works created AND performed by the dancers themselves, PLUS a new ballet by our incredible Artistic Director, Garrett Ammon.

I’ve had the chance to sit in on rehearsals over the past few days, and I wanted to preview for you some of the exciting things I’ve seen –

You won’t BELIEVE how great our dancers are looking! They are dancing with more power and energy than ever. You will especially love all of the athletic partnering throughout the show – no one held back for this one!

We have live music on stage for 2 of our pieces – piano with cello, and cello solo. Live music is always such a wonderful addition to a dance performance, and it’s a first for this show!

The dancers have created an amazing group of pieces, with a vast array of music (ranging from Yes to Bach), styles and intentions. One of the best parts of this show is the chance to talk to these artists afterward and find out exactly what they had in mind and what they experienced on the road to creating their pieces.

Garrett’s new ballet to the music of The Mamas & the Papas is incredible. Once again he has used both familiar and less-known songs by a group whose music evokes a wide range of memories and emotions – and once again, his choreography and the dancers will sweep you away.

The only sad part about this show is that it is for one weekend only, and then it’s gone!

Shows are this Friday at 8pm, Saturday the 4th at 8pm, and Sunday the 5th at 2pm. All shows are at our new North Denver performance home – the spacious and beautiful Pinnacle Events Center, which is located just west of I-25 at 84th Avenue and Huron.

I'm very excited to launch our new season, and I hope to see lots of people this weekend!

small talk - Letter from the Artistic Director

Our theme for last season was “experience the evolution.” This statement goes straight to the heart of what we do and believe. Dance is not something to be put on a pedestal and admired from afar, it is something to be tasted, felt and consumed. It must be nurtured and encouraged to change and grow.

Dance is a social art form, something to be done with others, something to be experienced, not simply observed. It is fleeting, existing only in our minds and hearts until the next performance. The dance studio is a microcosm, a miniature of the world where we play out the joys and struggles, hopes and fears of our lives. The goal is to become a better version of ourselves during those precious hours each day.

With small talk you will see expressions of these ideas. This program presents a distinct opportunity for our artists to go on a voyage of self discovery, not by themselves but with their peers and with you. It is not about achieving an unattainable perfection, but about a conversation that hopefully gives us greater insight into who we are and what we hope to become.

You will continue to see “experience the evolution” on our materials and website, along with the theme of this season – “Next.” This is our way of saying we won’t sit back. We have only just begun, and last season was only the start of a journey that we would like you to take with us. We will have fond memories, but we must continue our pursuit of doing what we do even better.

I hope you continue to join us on this amazing journey. Where to begin... We now have 36 set Outreach performances and all the performances for History of Dance are completely booked! The schools are so excited and some of the schools are even signed up to see every single Outreach show we offer!

The residency at Coronado Hills started last week and it has been a huge success so far. I am working with the 4th grade classes and am teachign them about landforms through movement. One class is working on a dance with canyons and rivers and another is working on a dance with glaciers and snow fall. The kids are absolutley so adorable and love to dance. All of them have had a lot of say in choreographing the pieces and really feel like they contributed something.

The next residency is at Thornton Elementary and starts September 29. I am working with the 5th graders at Thornton and we will be learning about nutrition. Yum!

Small Talk is October 3, 4, 5 so I have also been working on our free ticket program for this show. There are a ton of nonprofit organizations in the area, such as Goodwill, homeless shelters, retirement communities, etc that love getting these tickets and really benefit from it. Hopefully everyone who wants to come to these performances is able to. I've been watching rehersals and listening to the music allll day and I know that the audience is going to love the show!

I am excited to see what else unfolds this month and how the residency performances turn out. Everyday is something new and so much fun here. I love it!
