This show ROCKS

The first weekend of Rock Ballets was incredible. Fierce dancing, excited audiences, sold out houses - even with Halloween and the election taking up so much attention! And so many new, young faces in the crowd - it's clear that we are successfully reaching out to people who are new to ballet and getting them interested - what an amazing success.

I'm so proud of what our company is doing - creating new, exciting work that moves the dance genre forward, engaging audiences and giving them unexpected, wonderful experiences, and producing shows that ... ROCK!

One more weekend of Rock Ballets and it's on to Nutcracker. That means only 3 more chances to see these incredible works - the intense and exciting Mediate, the unbelieveably luscious and wonderful Love of My Life, and the new, fun/inspiring/heart wrenching/thought provoking/all-around-incredible An Occasional Dream. Wow.

I know where I'll be this weekend - soaking up every minute of this inspiring show! I hope you will join me.

Community Arts Education Conference

Hello all!

Well Julia and I are back from the Community Arts Education Conference which was held in Philadelphia this past week. This was my first time to the conference and I must say, I had a fabulous time! I attended seminars on evaluation and assessment, collaboration, working with senior citizens and students with special needs and many more. Not only was this conference informative, but it was also A LOT of fun!

I learned so much and met so many people that gave me advice on how to be a better "outreach manager" and make a larger impact in local schools and communities. I am so excited to be back at BNC and start exploring new options for the Outreach program. I have been very antsy to get back and start working! I am specifically interested in collaborating with other service nonprofits in the area. I'll keep you posted as things progress.

It felt great to be surrounded by so many like minded people from across the country who do similar work. This conference definitely reinforced my views on outreach and reminded me how much I love my job!!!

Rock Ballets - Letter from the Artistic Director

Welcome to Rock Ballets!

Music has always been a part of my life. My sister was playing the clarinet before I was born, and my brothers and I each took our turns in choral music. I think this instilled in me an awareness, appreciation and perhaps an obsession with all kinds of music.

When I was away from home, as a ballet student, I couldn't resist hopping on the bus every other week when I would receive my small living stipend. I wouldn't go to the supermarket like I should have, I would go straight to the record store and browse the aisles for hours. I would finally manage to justify that I could buy the complete recordings of The Velvet Underground, or a Rolling Stones box set and still be able to feed myself.

Over the years, I have created work to classical, jazz, bluegrass, country, blues and of course rock music. The thing I most love about rock is the particular place it holds in our public consciousness. Whether the music is from your particular generation or not, you have likely heard the songs, or at least a song by the particular artist, at some point. This creates a common ground, or launching pad, for a conversation between the performers and the audience.

Dance is an overt expression of how are lives connect to and affect each other. I hope you enjoy this program and in someway feel a connection between what you see on stage and your own world.

Best wishes,

Pre-Pointe shoe fittings

Yesterday was a really exciting day for 11 young ladies in our pre-pointe program.
Master fitter Amy Kenney, of Boulder Body Wear, came to fit these young dancers with their very first pair - and they were absolutely beside themselves with happiness and excitement. These shoes are different from pointe shoes because the shank (the bottom of the shoe which is akin to the sole of a regular shoe) is very soft. The shank of a pointe shoe is very, very hard. Pre-pointe shoes afford dancers a great deal of strength as they learn to keep their ankles from wobbling and as they try to roll up to pointe. However, they are safer than regular pointe shoes because while the dancer can work through them and gain strength while trying to get all the way up on pointe, the shank is too hard to actually allow them to go on pointe (which is very dangerous if you are not strong enough).

Outreach Update

Everything in the world of Outreach is really on a roll right now. The residencies are going so well and students are really showing their creative side by helping to choreograph the dances. Right now I am working on content material regarding landforms at Coronado Hills and nutrition at Thornton Elementary.

I'm now constantly singing songs about eating 5 fruits and vegetables a day and making healthy choices as well as envisioning students move like glaciers down a mountain or a river running through a canyon.

I will be out of the office next week at the Conference for Community Arts Education in Philadelphia with Julia. Being a Pennsylvania native, I am so excited to go back to the east coast as well as to attend a conference on arts education. I will be attending seminars on evaluation practices as well as making site visits to many local dance studios including The Rock School for Dance Education! I can't wait!

Nutcracker rehearsals

I have been working on teaching choreography to and coaching all of the children (there are over 50) in our production of The Nutcracker. Every Saturday I rehearse them from 1:45pm to 7pm. Today, rehearsals run the gamut...Angels, Bon Bons, Chinese, Party Children, Jesters, Battle Scene, Dolls, and more!

It's really fun to work with an entire cast of children on this production. The Nutcracker is an important part of developping young dancers - and these memories will last a lifetime.

Catching up!

We have been doing some really cool things in the past couple of weeks with the school - and I need to catch you up!

A couple of weeks ago, some of our Student Company members were featured Nutcracker characters at an event for Flatirons Crossing ! They dressed up as Clara, The Nutcracker Prince, and Sugar Plum Fairy. They were joined by Santa and Mrs. Claus who gave out gifts!

This past Saturday, we had a great event with our students! We called it Kids' Nite Out, and kids of all ages got to come hang out at the BNC studios with myself and all of our Student Company dancers. The kids played tons of games, played dress up, got their hair and nails done, got massages and tattoos, and had their fortunes told by the mysterious Jeremystika (one of our Student Company dancers)! We had so much fun, and a lot of the parents got to go out on the town - so they had fun, too!

Cheers!
